Connecticut Lawyer Sanctioned for Using AI-Generated 'Hallucinated' Briefs in Court Filings
The state Supreme Court has sanctioned Connecticut lawyer Ian G. Gottlieb and his firm, GLG Law in Wallingford, for submitting briefs containing "hallucinated" or inaccurate information produced by generative artificial intelligence. The court's order serves as a warning to the legal profession regarding the risks and limitations of using AI in legal practice. Gottlieb was ordered to complete six hours of continuing legal education focusing on ethics and office management, with three hours specifically dedicated to generative AI. Additionally, Gottlieb and his firm are each required to donate $1,000 to a bar group that provides professional education on generative AI. The inaccuracies were discovered in appeal briefs Gottlieb filed while representing a corporate landlord in eviction cases.
