Ketogenic Diet Significantly Reduces Liver Fat and Prediabetes in Clinical Trial
A recent clinical trial published in the Cell Press journal Cell Metabolism indicates that a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat ketogenic diet can lead to a 67% reduction in liver fat among individuals with obesity, prediabetes, and fatty liver disease. This reduction is significantly higher compared to those following Mediterranean or low-fat, plant-forward diets, which showed an average reduction of 45%. The study, led by Samuel Klein of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, involved 42 participants who were randomly assigned to one of the three diets. All participants achieved approximately 10% body weight loss over four to five months, with calorie intake adjusted to match this target across all groups.
