GLP-1 Drugs Show Potential for Extended Lifespan and Health Benefits Beyond Weight Loss
New research indicates that GLP-1 weight loss drugs, already widely used by millions of Americans, may contribute to a longer lifespan and offer unexpected health benefits. A recent study on mice demonstrated that taking semaglutide GLP-1s, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, for over three months led to improvements in blood sugar regulation, appearance, behavior, and extended their lifespan by approximately 100 days, or about 12%. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, noted that more studies are needed to confirm these effects in humans. Additionally, separate research conducted earlier this year revealed that GLP-1s have shown benefits in humans, including a potential reduction in the risk of heart attack and improved liver health. Other studies over the past year also suggest these drugs could possess anti-aging properties, with trials conducted in both humans and mice. The drugs work by mimicking a natural hormone that curbs appetite, and while calorie restriction is known to extend life, a s...
