Georgia Woman Joins Lawsuit Alleging GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs Cause Blindness
A Georgia woman, Diane Wirth, has joined a lawsuit claiming that GLP-1 weight loss drugs, such as Wegovy, caused her to become legally blind. Wirth, a former nurse practitioner, began using Wegovy in February 2025 and soon after lost vision in her right eye. The lawsuit, involving over 130 cases, alleges that the drug manufacturers, including Novo Nordisk and Lilly, were aware of a potential link between GLP-1 drugs and non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), a condition leading to blindness, but failed to list it as a side effect. The companies maintain that patient safety is a priority and cite studies showing no increased risk of NAION. The FDA is conducting a study to evaluate the safety of these drugs.
