NOAA's National Hurricane Center has reported Hurricane Polo's rapid intensification in the eastern Pacific, transforming from a tropical depression to a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 180 mph (290 km/h). This intensification, recorded on September 22, 2026, ranks as one of the fastest in the region's history, with wind speeds increasing by 95 knots in 24 hours. Polo's minimum central pressure dropped by 88 millibars during the same period, making it the second-fastest pressure drop on record in the eastern Pacific. Satellite imagery from NOAA-20 highlights Polo's well-defined eye and powerful cloud bands. The storm is expected to remain offshore of southwestern Mexico but has already brought heavy rain and gusty winds to the region.
