Cyclosporiasis Cases Rise in Florida Amid Costly and Limited Testing Availability
Florida is experiencing a surge in cyclosporiasis cases, with over 450 reported statewide. Lee County alone has recorded 39 cases, and Collier County has seven. Despite the rising numbers, testing for this parasitic illness remains both expensive and difficult to access. Susan Hook, a nurse practitioner at Samaritan Health and Wellness Center, noted that many patients are seeking urgent medical care due to severe symptoms, including more than 20 stools a day. Her clinic, which primarily serves uninsured individuals, does not offer testing due to the high costs involved. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that stool tests may not always detect the parasite, and testing can cost hundreds of dollars, regardless of insurance coverage, and is only available at select medical providers. Lee Health hospitals, however, do offer specialized testing with same-day results.
