Libraries Grapple with AI Literacy and Evolving Information Landscape Amidst Technological Shifts
Libraries are actively exploring the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) on information literacy and their operational practices. A recent inquiry by the Northern New York Library Network, involving academic, public, and library system workers, focused on how libraries can build critical reasoning skills in audiences amidst a landscape of AI, social media, misinformation, and paywalls. This discussion acknowledges that while libraries have historically adapted to technological changes, such as the internet, the rapid evolution of AI presents new challenges and opportunities. The inquiry highlighted the need for continuous evolution to meet changing community needs, with libraries transforming into full-service community centers offering makerspaces and rentable equipment. The resources gathered during this inquiry, though rapidly dating due to AI's pace, aim to inform library workers on AI's intersections with their work.
