Study Reveals Night-Shift Schedule Adjustment Improves Emergency Physicians' Sleep and Inflammatory Markers
A pilot study published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine indicates that a minor adjustment to night-shift hours can significantly improve sleep quality and reduce inflammatory biomarkers in emergency medicine physicians. Researchers from the University of Missouri School of Medicine, led by Elizabeth Kendrick, assessed 12 physicians over six months under three conditions: a baseline without overnight shifts, traditional overnight shifts (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.), and 'casino shifts' (8 p.m. to 4 a.m.). The study found that traditional overnight shifts were linked to higher inflammatory markers and poorer sleep. In contrast, the casino shifts resulted in improved measures, with white blood cell and platelet counts returning to baseline levels and better-preserved deep sleep. Participants also reported less sleepiness during the adjusted shifts. This research highlights the potential health benefits of modifying night-shift schedules for workers.
