Utah Department of Environmental Quality Streamlines Permitting Processes, Identifies Over 1,250 Areas for Improvement
The Utah Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is undertaking a comprehensive review of its permitting system to eliminate unnecessary work and simplify processes. This initiative has already identified over 150 items that can be eliminated and more than 1,100 that can be simplified. The goal is to allow DEQ staff to concentrate more effectively on protecting and improving Utah's air, land, and water resources, while simultaneously supporting statewide community development and growth. As part of this broader effort, the DEQ is introducing seven new streamlined air quality general permits, allocating $3 million for energy permitting reform, developing an e-permitting system, and implementing AI-assisted completeness reviews. These AI tools are projected to reduce processing times by days or even weeks, aiming for faster permitting without compromising environmental standards.
