Jim Spain Retires from Mizzou, Leaving Legacy of Student Success and Support
Jim Spain is retiring from the University of Missouri (Mizzou) after more than 30 years of service, including nearly 20 years as vice provost for undergraduate studies. During his tenure, Spain significantly impacted student success by focusing on removing barriers to graduation. He strengthened academic advising, expanded undergraduate research opportunities, simplified processes for transfer students, and leveraged technology to streamline course scheduling and connect students with campus resources. Under his leadership, Mizzou's graduation rate climbed to 77%, with over 90% of students earning a degree within six years and more than 90% of freshmen returning for their sophomore year. UM President Mun Choi credited Spain and his team for these achievements.
