Chinese Analyst Advocates U.S.-Style Immigration Policy to Boost Tech Competitiveness
Li Mingbo, deputy dean of the Guangzhou Institute of the Greater Bay Area (GIG), has suggested that China should adopt immigration policies similar to those of the U.S. to enhance its competitiveness in the global technology race. Li argues that despite recent tightening of U.S. visa policies, the American system offers valuable lessons, particularly in attracting high-tech talent. He noted that China currently lacks an immigration framework specifically designed for skilled technology professionals and is comparatively weak and conservative in this area. Li emphasized the urgent need for technical professionals in China and pointed to conflict-affected countries like Ukraine, Russia, and Iran as potential sources of highly skilled engineers and mathematicians seeking safer environments.
