New Mexico Delegation Calls for Expanded Investigation into DEA Fentanyl Practices
New Mexico's congressional delegation, including U.S. Sens. Ben Ray Luján and Martin Heinrich, and U.S. Reps. Melanie Stansbury, Teresa Leger Fernández, and Gabe Vasquez, all Democrats, have formally requested that the U.S. Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General (DOJ OIG) broaden its investigation into allegations that Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents knowingly allowed fentanyl shipments to enter New Mexico. The DOJ OIG initiated an investigation on August 17 following whistleblower complaints. These complaints allege that DEA agents, while monitoring fentanyl shipments, routinely refrained from seizing them with the aim of apprehending larger traffickers later. The New Mexico delegation's letter specifically asks for the probe to extend further back than 2024, citing whistleblower claims that such tactics, referred to as 'fentanyl walking,' date back to 2022.
