Kentucky Governor Beshear Establishes Medical Debt Relief Program via Executive Order

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has signed an executive order creating the Team Kentucky Medical Debt Relief Program, aiming to erase $250 million in medical debt for approximately 130,000 Kentuckians. The program designates $2.5 million to Undue Medical Debt, a nonprofit organization that purchases medical debt from hospitals and collection agencies at a reduced price. According to a news release, every dollar spent by the program in Kentucky will result in $100 in medical debt being erased. There is no application process for the program; eligible Kentuckians will be notified directly. To qualify, individuals must reside in Kentucky and either owe at least 5% of their yearly income in medical bills or have an income at or below 400% of the federal poverty level, which is approximately $100,000 for a family of three. The first phase of the program will see $100 million in medical debt cleared for 46,000 people, with notification letters to be sent out starting next week.
