New Study Reveals Species-Specific Mosquito Attraction to Human Odor, Offering Insights for Disease Control
A recent study conducted by Florida International University (FIU) researchers has found that different mosquito species are attracted to distinct human body odors and chemical profiles. The research, published in the journal iScience, involved 119 volunteers and three mosquito species: Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito), and Culex quinquefasciatus (southern house mosquito). Contrary to the idea that a single human profile attracts all mosquitoes, the study revealed that each species responded uniquely to the volunteers' chemical characteristics. For instance, Aedes aegypti showed a preference for individuals without added perfumes and with specific volatile compounds on their skin, also exhibiting a slight preference for men.
