Massachusetts Daycare Owner Charged with Assault and Abuse of Toddlers
Karen Rezendes, a 51-year-old Massachusetts woman who operated an in-home daycare for several years, has been arraigned on multiple charges for allegedly assaulting and abusing toddlers in her care. Kingston Police reported that incidents of abuse included violently shoving a child to the ground, hitting a toddler with kitchen supplies, slamming a child against a counter, and locking a child in the attic. The victims were primarily toddlers, ranging in age from 1 to 4 years old. Rezendes turned herself in after a warrant was issued for her arrest. The investigation, which spanned several weeks, began in July when Rezendes' estranged husband contacted parents about the alleged abuse, leading to tips to the police. Neighbors also reported having concerns about Rezendes' aggressive behavior for years. Her daycare is no longer licensed following investigations by the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families and the Department of Early Education and Care.
