Rhode Island Delegation Secures $13.5 Million Federal Funding for Providence Ferry Terminal Upgrade
U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, along with Representatives Gabe Amo and Seth Magaziner, successfully secured $13.5 million in federal funding for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) to upgrade the Providence Ferry Terminal. The terminal, located at 25 Portugal Parkway (Fox Point), is a vital hub for seasonal ferry service connecting Providence, Bristol, and Newport. The federal funding, part of a $657-million program administered by the U.S. Federal Transit Administration, will support the construction of a new, permanent ticketing pavilion with an office, restrooms, and a waiting area. Additionally, the project includes improvements to parking, stormwater treatment, new floating docks, ADA-compliant gangways, and sea wall repairs. Representative Magaziner highlighted the ferry's essential role in Rhode Island's transportation network and tourism economy.
