Pacific Hurricanes Lowell, Karina, and Marie Pose Potential Risks to Hawaii and California
The Pacific hurricane season has been active in 2026, with 15 tropical storms and hurricanes recorded so far. Currently, Hurricane Lowell, Hurricane Karina, and Tropical Storm Marie are spinning in the Pacific. Hurricane Lowell has intensified to a Category 5 storm with sustained winds of 160 mph (257 km/h) and is expected to remain powerful for several days. While Lowell is forecast to stay south of Hawaii, it is generating swells that could cause life-threatening surf and rip currents. Hurricane Karina, a Category 4 storm with winds of 145 mph (233 km/h), is moving west-northwest and is not expected to directly impact Hawaii but may disrupt trade winds. Tropical Storm Marie, located southwest of San Diego, California, is forecast to dissipate over the weekend but could bring humid air, heavy surf, and a chance of showers to Southern California.
