Canadian Wildfire Smoke Impacts U.S. Amid Climate Accountability Debate
Smoke from Canadian wildfires has drifted into the United States, raising concerns about air quality in American cities. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized Canada for failing to control the fires and has demanded compensation, citing the smoke's impact on American air quality. However, experts highlight that the conditions fueling these fires—hotter and drier weather—are linked to climate change, to which the United States has historically been the largest contributor. From 1850 to 2024, the U.S. accounted for 24% of global cumulative CO₂ emissions, more than any other country. While Canada is responsible for managing its forests and fire response, the broader climate conditions exacerbating these wildfires are a shared responsibility across borders. Attribution science indicates that human-caused climate change has significantly increased the likelihood and severity of such fires in Canada.
