Chicago Aldermen Advance $261 Million Settlement for Police Misconduct Lawsuits
Chicago aldermen have given initial approval to a historic $261 million mass settlement aimed at resolving 16 lawsuits against the Chicago Police Department. These lawsuits allege that former Detective Reynaldo Guevara framed men for murder, leading to wrongful convictions. The City Council Finance Committee broadly approved the measure, despite aldermen expressing concerns about the substantial cost to taxpayers. Law Department attorney Jessica Felker stated that the settlement is in the best interest of taxpayers, as losing individual suits in court could result in double the cost. The deal, which is expected to face a final full council vote later this month, would be the largest police misconduct settlement in Chicago's history. The 17 plaintiffs in these lawsuits collectively spent 384 years in prison due to Guevara's alleged actions.
