El Niño to bring more snow, rain to parts of the US
The upcoming winter season is expected to bring significant weather variations across the United States, influenced by a strong El Niño event. According to forecasts from NOAA and OpenSnow, regions such as California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and southern and eastern Colorado are likely to experience above-average snowfall. Southern California, the Southwest, the southern Plains, the Gulf Coast, and Florida are predicted to see increased rainfall. Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest, northern Rockies, and areas near the Great Lakes may face drier-than-normal conditions. The strongest El Niño since 1950 is anticipated, with a 75% chance of record-setting conditions from October to December and a 90% likelihood of a very strong event throughout fall and winter. This phenomenon is expected to shift the jet stream northward, leading to warmer and drier conditions in the Midwest and Northern Rockies.
