Minnesota EV Registration Costs Spark Debate Over Equity and Infrastructure Funding
A Minnesota resident recently highlighted a significant disparity in vehicle registration costs, noting that a 2023 Polestar 2 electric vehicle (EV) could incur annual registration fees of approximately $828, compared to about $50 for a 2014 Buick. This substantial increase is attributed to Minnesota's registration model, which includes a specific EV surcharge and a percentage-based calculation tied to the vehicle's Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) and a depreciation schedule. Commenters on Reddit explained that the EV fee can be 0.5% of the MSRP, with a minimum annual payment of $150. For a $60,000 EV, this translates to a $300 fee. The registration calculation also incorporates a depreciation plan, where the percentage of the original MSRP decreases over the vehicle's lifespan, along with wheel taxes and other fees.
