Singaporean Man Sentenced to Jail and Fine for Insulting Islam in Malaysia
Mohamed Anim Atam, a 56-year-old Singaporean security guard, has been sentenced to 14 days in jail and fined RM7,000 (approximately US$1,733) by a Johor Bahru court in Malaysia. He pleaded guilty to insulting Islam, an offense under Section 298 of the Penal Code. The incident occurred on July 30 when Atam allegedly made derogatory remarks about Islam while traveling in an e-hailing car from Jalan Tun Razak to Jalan Meldrum. The e-hailing driver, Muhamad Danial Haikal Nadzahakim, recorded the conversation and uploaded it to social media, where it subsequently went viral. According to local media reports, Atam described the Quran as lacking compassion and focusing only on killing during his journey. He was arrested on August 18 with assistance from Singapore police and was unrepresented during his court appearance on August 21. He appealed for a lighter sentence, citing high blood pressure and ongoing divorce proceedings.
