GLP-1 Drugs Show Benefits Beyond Weight Loss, Including Cardiovascular and Kidney Protection
GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), are increasingly recognized for benefits extending beyond weight loss. Recent analyses indicate that a significant portion of their positive effects on the heart, kidneys, and liver are independent of weight reduction. For instance, roughly two-thirds of the cardiovascular benefit seen with semaglutide, including fewer heart attacks, strokes, and cardiovascular deaths, is unrelated to weight loss, with arterial inflammation decreasing early in treatment. Similarly, nearly all kidney protection appears to be weight-independent, as GLP-1 receptors directly influence kidney function, reducing protein leakage, fibrosis, and inflammation. Liver benefits, particularly for fatty liver disease (MASH), also show 50-70% independence from weight loss. Emerging data suggests potential improvements in heart failure symptoms, cartilage restoration in osteoarthritis, reductions in substance-use and mood disorders, and pos...
