Democratic Lawmakers Hold Forum on Deaths in ICE Encounters, Call for Accountability
Top Democratic lawmakers, including Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Representative Robert Garcia (D-CA), Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), held a public forum where families testified about the deaths of five individuals fatally shot by federal immigration agents. The forum, the fifth on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issues, focused on seeking justice and accountability from the government regarding incidents involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Witnesses, such as Donna Ganger, mother of Renée Nicole Good, who was shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, and Rachel Reyes, mother of Ruben Ray Martinez, who was killed by an ICE agent in South Padre Island, Texas, shared their stories and called for reforms. Democrats at the forum advocated for body cameras, real warrant processes for judges, aggressive independent investigations, and criminal prosecutions. No Republicans attended the event.
