Representative Dwight Evans Announces $80 Million Federal Grant for SEPTA Trolley Station Accessibility Improvements
U.S. Representative Dwight Evans (D-PA-3) and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) have announced an $80 million federal grant from the All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP). This funding is designated to make three trolley stations in Philadelphia's Center City Trolley Tunnel fully accessible. The stations, located at 22nd Street, 33rd Street, and 36th Street, are currently only accessible via stairs, which restricts access for individuals with disabilities, families with strollers, and others unable to use stairs. The projects will involve retrofitting these stations with elevators connecting street level to underground boarding areas, as well as constructing raised platforms and other enhancements to accommodate SEPTA's new fleet of low-floor streetcars.
