Edinburgh Implements Tourist Tax to Fund City Improvements
Edinburgh has introduced a tourist tax, effective from July 24, 2026, applying a 5% fee to all paid overnight accommodations. This initiative aims to generate up to £50 million annually to enhance the city's infrastructure and services. The tax applies to hotels, B&Bs, hostels, and holiday rentals, with a cap of five consecutive nights. The revenue will fund projects under themes like City Operations and Infrastructure, Culture, Heritage and Events, and Destination and Visitor Management. Initial projects include contributions to local festivals and increased public safety measures.
