FDA Issues Class I Risk Warning for GreenWise Blueberries and Mixed Berries Due to E. coli Contamination
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Class I risk classification for several GreenWise brand blueberry and mixed berry products sold at Publix stores. This classification, the highest risk level, indicates a reasonable probability that consuming or being exposed to the contaminated products could lead to serious adverse health consequences or death. Publix initiated a recall of all affected lots on July 29, following concerns about potential contamination with E. coli O145. The recalled products include GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries (10 oz and 48 oz) and GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries (10 oz and 48 oz). These berries were distributed to Publix locations across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. As of July 30, the FDA reported 12 illnesses in Florida and Georgia, including four hospitalizations, with symptoms appearing between May 11 and June 5. No deaths have been reported.
