Mediation Fails in Lawsuit Against College Station Over Deadly Police Raid
Mediation efforts have failed to resolve a federal lawsuit filed by the family of Mark Hopkins against the City of College Station, Texas, following his death during a police raid in February 2023. Hopkins, a 22-year-old Blinn College student, was shot and killed by College Station police officers who were executing a search warrant at a home on Spring Loop. Hopkins and his girlfriend were reportedly awakened by what they believed were intruders, prompting Hopkins to fire a shotgun, to which police responded with fatal force. Court records later confirmed that Hopkins was not the target of the narcotics investigation that led to the raid; the intended target was Abraham Escobar, described by police as a 'high-level drug dealer.' A Brazos County grand jury cleared the officer who fired the fatal shot. The Hopkins family's lawsuit accuses officers of using a false statement to obtain the search warrant, withholding body camera footage, and using an M84 flash-bang grenade during the raid.
