American Institute of Stress Offers Guidance on Managing Back-to-School Anxiety in Children
The American Institute of Stress is providing advice on how parents and caregivers can help children manage stress and anxiety during the back-to-school transition. Mental health experts, including pediatric psychologist Tianna Snyder and licensed clinical psychologist Brett Martin, highlight that even children who enjoy school can experience anxiety due to the shift from unstructured summer to a highly structured school environment. Signs of stress in children can manifest as behavioral changes, increased screen time, withdrawal, irritability, or physical complaints like headaches and stomach aches. The Kids Mental Health Foundation suggests three strategies: anticipating transitions, building practical skills, and strengthening school connections.
