Volkswagen Group of America Recalls Over 208,000 Vehicles for Steering Defect

Volkswagen Group of America has initiated a recall of more than 208,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a significant steering system defect. The recall primarily affects 2018 Volkswagen Atlas and 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan models, which represent the first model-year of their respective generations, as well as 2019-2021 Audi Q3 crossovers. The core issue stems from a crucial mounting component where one of the bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe can corrode and eventually snap. Should this bolt fail, the steering rack housing itself can break, leading to a sudden and complete loss of steering control. This defect substantially increases the risk of a crash. Volkswagen and Audi dealerships are instructed to replace the right-side steering rack mounting bolt free of charge for all affected vehicles. Owners will be notified directly by mail to schedule the necessary service appointment.
