California Prepares for Hurricane Polo Amid Emergency
California's coastal cities, including Long Beach and Newport Beach, are bracing for Hurricane Polo, a Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 150 mph (241 kph). The storm, currently located 165 miles south of Zihuatanejo, is expected to bring elevated surf, high tides, and potentially dangerous rip currents to Southern California beaches starting this weekend. Local officials have declared emergencies and are racing to rebuild sand barriers eroded by Hurricane Marie earlier this month. The National Weather Service warns that the combination of high tides and strong swells could lead to significant coastal flooding. While a direct hit on California is unlikely, some forecast models suggest the storm or its remnants could impact parts of the U.S., including Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, over the next 7–10 days.
