Record Heat Hits LA Amid Strengthening El Niño
Southern California is currently experiencing a prolonged heat wave, with temperatures reaching triple digits in parts of Los Angeles. On October 2, downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach recorded 103°F (39.4°C), breaking daily records, while Burbank tied its record at 102°F (38.9°C). Extreme heat warnings remain in effect across Los Angeles and Ventura counties through October 8, with temperatures expected to peak at 105°F (40.6°C) in some valleys. Meanwhile, a strong El Niño is developing in the tropical Pacific, with NOAA predicting a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during fall and winter 2026-27. This phenomenon, characterized by unusually warm Pacific waters, could influence California's weather later in the season, increasing the likelihood of above-normal precipitation in southern parts of the state.
