Bangor Wastewater Sample Tests Positive for Measles, Maine CDC Urges Vaccination
A wastewater sample collected in Bangor, Maine, has tested positive for measles, as confirmed last week. While a subsequent sample collected a few days later tested negative, officials are unable to pinpoint the specific location of the individual who may have had the disease, or whether they were a resident or merely passing through. In response, an epidemiologist is urging healthcare providers to be vigilant and screen for measles cases. Sara Robinson, Director of the Maine CDC Infectious Disease Epidemiology Program, emphasized that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles and recommended that everyone check their vaccine records to ensure they are up to date. This development follows five confirmed measles cases in Penobscot County in February, with no additional cases reported since.
