Republican Congressman Tom Kean Jr. Reveals Depression as Cause for Months-Long Absence from Congress
Republican New Jersey Representative Tom Kean Jr. publicly disclosed on the House floor that his months-long absence from Congress was due to a diagnosis of depression. Kean returned to Congress for the first time since March 5, having been hospitalized for testing due to health concerns. He explained that depression is a complex illness, encompassing physical and emotional aspects, and is more profound than simply feeling sad. Doctors recommended his continued hospitalization to address the illness. During his absence, Kean maintained contact with House Speaker Mike Johnson. Despite his medical leave, financial records indicate that Kean engaged in stock trading between March 10 and March 31, buying and selling shares in eight different companies, with combined values ranging from $50,008 to $190,000. He also signed documents approving travel for his chief of staff in mid-March.
