LA County reviews wildfire recovery efforts
Los Angeles County has conducted a comprehensive review of its response and recovery efforts following the devastating Palisades and Eaton wildfires in January 2025. The Palisades Fire, fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds, burned 23,700 acres, destroyed over 6,800 structures, and claimed 12 lives, making it the ninth-deadliest wildfire in California history. Hours later, the Eaton Fire erupted in Altadena, consuming 14,000 acres, destroying 9,400 structures, and resulting in 19 fatalities, ranking as the fifth-deadliest wildfire in the state. The review, led by the McChrystal Group, highlighted the county's immediate response efforts, such as recovery task forces and debris removal, but noted the absence of formalized plans and systems for recovery and repopulation. Recommendations include updating recovery plans, defining leadership roles, and improving communication and volunteer management systems. The findings were discussed during a Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting on September 15, 2026.
