The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation (DFR) has issued a warning to consumers regarding a surge in scams utilizing popular mobile payment applications such as Venmo, Cash App, Zelle, and PayPal. These apps, while convenient for sending and receiving money, are increasingly being exploited by scammers to steal funds and gain unauthorized access to financial accounts. The DFR highlights several common scam tactics, including the 'payment sent by mistake' scam, where fraudsters send money and then request it back, only for the original payment to be reversed later, leaving the consumer out of pocket. Another prevalent scam involves impersonators posing as customer service representatives, who contact users claiming account issues and solicit sensitive information like passwords or verification codes.
