Invasive Argentine Tegus Pose Growing Threat in South Florida
The Argentine black and white tegu, an invasive lizard species, is increasingly becoming a concern for Florida wildlife officials, particularly in Miami-Dade County. These large lizards, which can grow up to 4.5 feet long, are known to consume eggs and young of native species, posing a threat to local ecosystems. The tegus were introduced through the exotic pet trade and have established breeding populations in several Florida counties. Wildlife officials are actively working to manage and reduce their numbers to protect native wildlife and prevent further ecological damage.
