Air Force Implements New Policy for Separating Troops with Extended Shaving Profiles
The Department of the Air Force has issued new guidance directing commanders to separate Airmen and Guardians who have held medical shaving profiles for extended periods. The policy, outlined in a memo dated July 28, 2026, targets those who have maintained shaving profiles for more than 12 months within a 24-month period and are unable to meet grooming standards. This update follows a December 2025 policy revision after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's directive to enforce military grooming standards. The policy does not affect religious waivers for Sikhs, Muslims, and other groups allowed to wear beards. Service members separated under this policy will be discharged honorably, provided their separation is solely due to the condition and not misconduct. Commanders can recommend retention on a case-by-case basis if there is a compelling government interest, such as low manning rates or specialized skills.
