Swiss Tourist Sentenced to One Year in Bali Prison for Ins Insulting 'Day of Silence'
A Swiss tourist, Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, 26, has been sentenced to one year in prison by the Denpasar District Court in Bali, Indonesia. He was found guilty of violating Indonesia's new criminal code by insulting the sacred Balinese Hindu observance known as Nyepi, or the Day of Silence. Zgraggen posted messages on social media, including video clips, where he boasted about defying restrictions that prohibit residents and visitors from leaving their homes or accommodations, except for emergencies. In one video, he described walking to a beach during the observance and called the tradition "crazy" and used an expletive. The court determined that he posted these messages despite being informed of the restrictions by staff at his villa. The Day of Silence, typically observed in March, requires people to stay home, remain silent, and meditate, with the island's airport shutting down and internet services being switched off. These restrictions apply to everyone, regardless of religion or nationality.
