San Francisco Police Locate Sunken Alcatraz Boat, Face Challenges in Recovery
The San Francisco Police Department has located the sunken 49-foot cabin cruiser, Volare, which disappeared beneath San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz Island. The vessel was found resting between 120 and 130 feet below the surface in a heavily dredged shipping channel. The boat sank during a memorial service for the deceased daughter and niece of John and Clifford Boisa, with 20 close friends and relatives aboard. A massive wave is believed to have struck the three-deck vessel, causing it to list, flood, and roll over. Only about half of the passengers were wearing life jackets, and 16 people were rescued by nearby civilian boaters and emergency crews. Two family members remain missing and are presumed dead. The police are using sonar and remotely operated underwater vehicles to inspect the wreckage and determine if it can be safely raised.
