Chinatown Cookbook Highlights Collective Self-Care and Community Advocacy
A new cookbook titled 'Aunties’ Cookbook: Self-Care in Migration,' created by artist Yolanda Yang, showcases the recipes and stories of senior women in Chinatown. The cookbook emphasizes a cultural perspective of self-care that prioritizes the collective health and well-being of the community over individual needs. These 'aunties' are actively involved in advocating for critical issues such as green spaces, clean air, healthy soil, affordable Chinese supermarkets, language access, and neighborhood preservation. Yang, who works at the Pao Arts Center, observes a direct link between the food on their kitchen tables and their community advocacy. The book, presented in both English and Chinese, aims to highlight the significant contributions these senior women make to improving Chinatown for all its residents.
