Congressman George Latimer Advocates for Closure of Delaney Hall Detention Facility Amid Concerns
Congressman George Latimer, representing New York's 16th Congressional District, has called for the closure of the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. Latimer's inspection of the facility revealed concerning conditions, including inadequate medical care and overcrowding. The facility, operated by the GEO Group for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has been criticized for its dangerous and inhumane conditions. Latimer, along with Congressman Ritchie Torres, conducted a Congressional oversight visit following the death of Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, the third detainee to die at the facility in nine months. Despite the political climate and Republican control in Washington, Latimer is pushing for legislative action to close the facility.
