Democratic Congressional Candidate Arrested After Maui Beach Altercation
Kirill Basin, a Democratic congressional candidate challenging incumbent U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda, was arrested following a violent incident at Keawakapu Beach in South Kihei, Hawaii. Basin, aged 40, faces two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, with bail set at $1 million. The altercation began when a 61-year-old man requested Basin to lower his music volume, leading to Basin allegedly threatening the man with a firearm and his wife. A bystander intervened, resulting in a physical confrontation where Basin reportedly brandished a knife, threatened multiple individuals, and eventually discarded the knife into the ocean. The knife was later retrieved by police. Basin has a history of arrests for assault and property damage, and several restraining orders have been filed against him, including one by Maui County Council member Thomas Cook.
