World War II Airman Clifford Keeney Finally Laid to Rest in Pennsylvania
Clifford Keeney, an Army Airman who was shot down over Germany during World War II, has finally been laid to rest in York, Pennsylvania, after 81 years. Keeney was killed in action in 1944 when his B-17 Flying Fortress was hit during a mission. His remains were buried by enemy forces in Germany, and it took decades for them to be recovered and identified. The breakthrough came in June 2025, when the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency used DNA analysis to confirm his identity. His niece, Bonnie McClure, who had vowed to bring her uncle home, was present at the funeral, which included a military salute and the presentation of a folded American flag. The ceremony provided closure for Keeney's family, who had waited decades for this moment.
