American Oversight Sues ICE for Autopsy Records Amid Rising Deaths in Custody
American Oversight, a nonprofit organization focused on government transparency, has filed a lawsuit against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, seeks to obtain autopsy reports and internal reviews related to deaths in federal immigration custody. This legal action comes as the number of fatalities in ICE custody has increased, with 51 deaths reported since President Trump returned to office. The lawsuit claims that ICE has not responded to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for records on these deaths, which include autopsies, toxicology reports, and internal reviews. American Oversight argues that the lack of detailed reporting makes it difficult for families and policymakers to understand the circumstances of these deaths and whether they could have been prevented.
