Davenport Community Center Suffers $165,000 in Damages from Repeated Copper Thefts
The Center, a community organization in Davenport, Iowa, has sustained approximately $165,000 in damages due to two separate incidents of copper theft from its heating and air conditioning units. The first theft occurred earlier this summer, and a second incident took place last week while repairs from the initial vandalism were underway. According to Pennie Kellenberger, The Center’s director and CEO, the thieves made off with only about $300 worth of copper, but the resulting damage to the HVAC system, electrical infrastructure, and roof is extensive. The Center, located on Brady Street, provides essential services to the community, including a food pantry, a skate church, and homeless services. Kellenberger stated that while they budget for minor repairs, the scale of this damage is unprecedented for the organization.
