Mathematician Hong Wang Wins 2026 Fields Medal for Solving Needle Conjecture
The 2026 Fields Medal, a prestigious award in mathematics, has been awarded to four young researchers, including Hong Wang, a professor at New York University. Wang is the third woman to receive this honor in the award's 90-year history. She was recognized for her work on the Kakeya conjecture, a problem concerning the minimal space required to rotate a needle in every possible direction in three dimensions. Her solution, developed with collaborator Joshua Zahl, involved using harmonic analysis to demonstrate a precise trade-off between the thinness of tubes representing needle directions and the total space they occupy. This breakthrough has been compared to a 'once-in-a-century' result.
