Tel Aviv University Study Reveals Evolutionary Differences in Male and Female Pelvis for Walking Efficiency
A new study led by Professor Yoel Rak of Tel Aviv University, published in 'Scientific Reports,' suggests that the modern human male pelvis evolved a unique biomechanical mechanism for more efficient long-distance walking. The research, which compared Neanderthal pelvises with those of modern humans, indicates that the hip joints of modern males are positioned further forward on the pelvic ring. This creates a 'natural spring' system where front thigh muscles absorb shock, store energy, and release it with each step, improving walking efficiency. Conversely, the study posits that the female pelvis retained an ancient structure, similar to male Neanderthals, due to the demands of childbirth requiring a shallower pelvis and wider birth canal.
