Texas Education Agency's School Ratings Highlight Challenges for Black Students
In Texas, Black students are disproportionately attending schools labeled as failing by the Texas Education Agency. The state's A-F rating system, which evaluates schools based on student performance on the STAAR exam, shows that majority-Black schools are less likely to achieve high academic ratings. Of approximately 300 majority-Black campuses, only 20 received an A, while 105 scored a D or F. This disparity highlights ongoing challenges in providing quality education to Black students, with many families facing tough decisions about whether to send their children to under-resourced neighborhood schools or seek better opportunities elsewhere.
