Bulgaria's Defence Chief Clarifies Drone Explosion Incident as Non-Deliberate
On August 8, a drone explosion occurred near Kardam, Bulgaria, which was clarified by Defence Chief Admiral Emil Eftimov as not being a deliberate action against the country. The drone, identified as a Maya type decoy, was believed to have been diverted by electronic warfare systems. Despite carrying up to five kilograms of explosives, the incident resulted in no damage. This event is part of a series of similar incidents in the region, including in the Baltic republics, Türkiye, and Romania. The Bulgarian government has intensified air defense measures in response to increased drone activity, particularly following interceptions of Shahed drones on the Romanian-Ukrainian border. The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry has engaged with Ukraine for assurances and an investigation into the incident.
